Listening to Stereo, Binaural and Spatial Audio

Updated: Jun 4, 2022

While listening to stereo, two places are established in either the left or right channels. If one of the sound sources is disabled, you can only hear the other sound source that is assigned to one of the channels. To avoid the influence on stereo image while using speakers instead of headphones, the speakers (left and right) should be spaced apart. It is usually suggested to listen with headphones or earbuds to reproduce the distinctive listening experience where the binaural listening experience is located on the orchestra's central stage, where the music is positioned in 360 degree area and sounds same even if the head is positioned in a different location. Spatial audio allows you to listen to music as though you were a part of a soundscape. Spatial audio listening creates an immersive experience by placing you in the centre. If you're using headphones or a VR headset that measures your head movement, the sound experience alters as you turn your head or twist your body (High Fidelity, 2021).
