Binaural Recording In Depth - 3 ( Our Head)

Updated: Jun 6, 2022

When the acoustic influence of a person's head is paired with hearing, the HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) is known. HRTF is unique to each individual. The efficiency of binaural recordings varies from person to person since everyone's head size and shape is different. Our heads also play a significant part in sound perception. Our skull is a big resonating cavity with other resonant cavities inside such as the oral cavity, sinuses, and so on. Higher frequencies of sound are blocked from immediately reaching either side of the ear due to the huge bulk of the skull casting acoustic shadows. This acoustic shadowing phenomenon is crucial in binaural microphone or binaural recording setup (Kroff, 2021).
