Our sense of hearing is also quite robust, allowing us to not only hear noises up to 140 decibels but also to pinpoint their source with some accuracy, thanks to the pair of ears on our heads. Although we humans lack superpowers, our sensor suite is nonetheless rather remarkable (Maloney, 2020).
The goal of this dummy head project is to reproduce binaural audio capturing capability on a shoestring budget, as commercially produced dummy heads are way too expensive.
The first method to creating this low-budget dummy head binaural microphone was to purchase the necessary components to construct the sculpture itself.
This model was created with precast silicon ear rubbers (figure 1), a foam mannequin head (figure 2), two lavalier microphones (figure 3) and few audio connectors (figure 4).
